Why Yes, We ARE Wrapping Things Up Here

Sergeant In Motion: Schlock Mercenary Book 20, is drawing to a close, and with it, we’re wrapping up the twenty-year Schlock Mercenary mega-arc, that huge, daily, serial contiguity I started back in June of 2000.

When it ends, I’ll probably take some time off. That wasn’t the original plan, but these last few months have forced me to strike an uncomfortable balance between productivity and health. It seems appropriate to adjust that balance healthward once the big story is done.

Don’t panic. Schlock Mercenary isn’t going away, and my doctor assures me that I’m not in danger of any immediate terminal decline—at least not beyond the ubiquitous entropic slide endemic to carbon-based life. And hey, life exists by exchanging local order for disorder elsewhere, so I plan to make every effort to keep my molecules nice and organized for as long as possible.

I have lots of stories yet to tell, and the universe of Sergeant Schlock is a fine place in which to tell a great many of them.

We Stole a God, Now We Need to Land Him

Last week’s episode of TypeCastRPG was heist-themed. We stole the sleeping giant Ghubrak from a museum, strapped him up with a sailcloth and a magical engine, and then got ourselves excreted from the gut of Ryncardia.

Tonight’s episode promises to be less heisty. I think it’ll begin with the landing of our extremely makeshift airship, but I don’t know what adventures will face us after we debark¹.

Tune in at 9pm EST, twitch.tv/typecastrpg, and join us as we find out what happens next.

¹ De-back? Unshoulder?

Tonight We’ll Try Role-Playing a Heist

Tonight on TypeCastRPG we’ll be attempting something new. We’re going to work some game mechanics from the LEVERAGE role-playing game into our D&D 5e session to role-play a heist.

Our Goal: to free a comatose giant (one of the gods of Vaeron) from the clutches of the people who are about to purchase him at auction, and then mine his body for magical materials.

Our Resources: A couple of allies, a paltry assortment of level-appropriate magical gear, and an artifact that lets us speak to the gods…

Our Team: five 7th-level characters.
In Leverage-speak, they are:

  • HITTER (the Paladin)
  • HACKER (the Necromancer)
  • GRIFTER (the Cleric/Bard)
  • THIEF (the Rogue)
    and of course…
  • MASTERMIND (the Druid, wearing a tiara that gives her an INT score of 19)

(If we can live up to this image, it will be epic)

Join us tonight at 9pm Mountain!
Hopefully I’ll have enough brain-cycles to role-play some proper grifting AND to crank out some fun session art.

Twenty Years of Archives, Ad-Free!

Would you like to be reading Schlock Mercenary ad-free? How about being able to read it a week at a time, and in a higher resolution?

Join the Schlock Mercenary Patreon, and for just $2.50 per month, the entirety of the Schlock Mercenary archives will be available to you for week-at-a-time, ad-free browsing¹. And at $5.00 per month, you’ll be reading in retina resolutions².

What does week-at-a-time browsing look like?

Well, it’s hard to deliver the experience via a screen shot.  We had to pull back pretty far to show you just how much content is on each page, and from back here it’s kind of hard to read.

You’ll be scrolling down (probably with the mouse-wheel), uninterrupted by ads, and when you reach the end of the page you can arrow-key (or click “Next”) to advance to the next big stack of Schlock Mercenary.

What’s the difference between the regular and high-res versions of the strip? Math says “65% more pixels,” but it’s probably better to show what that will look like. Here’s a side-by-side comparison, using the fourth panel from Thursday, January 23rd.

(NOTE: The blog engine may have up-scaled or down-scaled the sample image, depending on how your browser requested the flow of the page. Click on the image for an exact, pixel-for-pixel version of the screen captures.)

There are other benefits to becoming a patron, like digital goodies³, and front-of-the-line, pre-order access to new merchandise. Head over to patreon.com/schlockmercenary and have a look.

¹ Ad-free, week-at-a-time, and high-res browsing will require you to link your Patreon account to Schlock Mercenary. This is done securely, via the Patreon API. Our privacy policy has more information.
² High-resolution browsing requires the use of a browser capable of requesting the high-res images. As of this writing that means almost all mobile browsers, MacOS browsers, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge.
³ This blog post serves as a fine reminder to Howard and Sandra that it’s time to put up some more Patreon-exclusive digital goodies.
