Good News, Bad News, Bad News First

The Bad News:

I was customizing a foam tray for a completed unit of miniatures, and I inflicted a lovely tar-and-feather style burn on my hand using hot glue. This is the kind of burn where you quickly try to rub away the super-hot sticky substance (hot glue or tar) and RIP! The skin comes off with it.

The Good News:

It was my left hand.

Even Better!

It was the back of my thumb.

I’m working hard to think of this as excellent luck. I can still type and I can still draw. Sure, it smarts like a Fulbright scholar, and the wound is weeping like its dog died, but it’s on my LEFT HAND.

I should take some painkillers. Back-of-thumb second-degree burns don’t provide nearly enough endorphins.

  1. Ow! I’m wincing in sympathy here. But at least it’s The Left Hand.

I know exactly where you’re coming from. If I accidentally sliced off a finger while cutting up vegetables or something, my first thought would be “now how am I going to type?!”

  3. Forget the pain, beware of infection. Burns are really good at getting those. Use lots of anti-infection goop. Petroleum jelly based anti-infection goop will ease the pain.

  5. Take good care of that – burn wounds get infected easily and leave nasty scars. You may want to look into this: http://www.woundbegone.com/ I just discovered it and haven’t had occasion to test it myself, but it’s a new addition to our first-aid kit and looks like it would do a good job on your kind of wound.

  7. OWIE!!

Sounds more like 3rd degree to me unless what actually ripped off was the “embryonic” blister……..

    1st degree redness and pain
    2nd degree blisters
3rd degree “The Comfy Chair”….wait that is with the Spanish Inquisition….for burns it’s burned all the way through the skin and left a nasty weepy wound

Agree with the other advice lots of anti-infection goop.

    1. Re: OWIE!!

Definitely 2nd degree. It left a nasty, weepy wound, but only because the embryonic blister ripped away. It was a very, very thin layer of skin I lost, and there are puffy blisters to either side of the rip.

    1. Yes since Howard is an HT-sub M model that is good advice. However if he was an HT-sub I model that would be bad advice since it could ultimately lead to his liver falling out……..

If that doesn’t make sense look up the 2 models of the plasgun……

      1. The comment made sense without research. I also know about how Booze and Tylenol don’t mix because my Papa is a Jack-M model slowly trying to do what Schlock’s first BH-209 did while the rest of the family watches.

  9. I’ve had good luck with the “wafer of water”-style burn bandages for such things.

I’ve cleverly been distracted (thanks boss) while soldering, and stuck the soldering pencil between my middle and ring finger to hold it for a moment while I rearranged things I was working with. Er… Scars are little reminders.
